Zcash Prepares for Major NU7 Network Overhaul, Targeting Faster Transactions

The Zcash ecosystem is gearing up for a significant network upgrade. Developers have confirmed that the NU7 mainnet upgrade is scheduled to go live on November 5, following alignment among key engineering teams and stakeholders. This marks a pivotal step in enhancing the network's core performance.

Key Enhancements: Speed and Sustainability

At the heart of NU7 is a dramatic improvement in network throughput and user experience. The most notable change is the reduction of the target block time from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds, promising faster transaction confirmations.

  • Integration of the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM): This mechanism will be formally incorporated into the protocol. The chosen configuration preserves ZEC's existing halving schedule, while a portion of previously removed supply is set to be reissued starting in February 2031.
  • Legacy Transaction Deprecation: To maintain security and code efficiency, support for the V4 transaction format will be discontinued post-upgrade.

A Phased and Cautious Rollout Plan

To ensure a smooth transition, developers have outlined a careful testing phase. Core developer Sean Bowe indicated that NU7 will first be activated on the testnet on October 6. The team will monitor its performance for approximately two weeks before finalizing the mainnet activation block height on October 20.

For most users and wallet services, the impact is expected to be minimal, as no new transaction formats are introduced. However, Bowe noted that operators of full nodes, indexers, and block explorers may need to make adjustments to accommodate the new network parameters.

Strong Community Mandate

The proposals forming NU7 previously received overwhelming support in community governance votes. Data shows that 99.9% of weighted votes favored reducing the block time, and 98.9% supported maintaining the existing halving mechanism. This provides a clear mandate for the upgrade's implementation.

As the November 5 date approaches, the Zcash community is finalizing preparations for this upgrade designed to deliver greater speed and long-term network stability.
