Zcash Sets Date for Critical Ironwood Network Upgrade
The Zcash development community has finalized the timeline for a significant network enhancement. Dubbed the Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3), it is now scheduled to activate at block height 3,428,143, which corresponds to approximately 8:00 PM Beijing Time on July 28, as confirmed by core developers.
Addressing a Critical Vulnerability in the Orchard Pool
This upgrade is a direct response to a previously disclosed vulnerability within the Orchard shielded pool. The flaw presented a theoretical risk where an attacker could potentially create counterfeit ZEC without limits. A unique challenge was the pool's strong privacy features, which made it impossible to determine if any fake coins were minted prior to the fix being implemented.
Key Components of the Ironwood Solution
To resolve this issue and fortify the network, the Ironwood upgrade introduces two primary changes:
- A New Privacy Pool: The upgrade will launch a fresh shielded pool utilizing an updated and more secure version of the Orchard protocol. The existing pool will be gradually phased out, transitioning users to the new, more robust infrastructure.
- Enhanced Proof System Control: A new control flag is being added to the zero-knowledge proof circuitry. This flag provides the capability to disable transfers to other users within the pool if needed, while preserving the essential "change" functionality. This acts as a crucial emergency circuit-breaker for future security management.
The Ironwood upgrade represents a proactive step in strengthening Zcash's core privacy architecture. Its deployment is viewed as essential for maintaining user trust and ensuring the long-term security and integrity of the network.
