The Rise of AI Bonds: A New Asset Class Reshapes Fixed Income

A significant shift is underway in the fixed income landscape, according to Rick Rieder, Chief Investment Officer of Global Fixed Income at BlackRock. He points to an unprecedented wave of debt financing fueled by the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. High-grade corporate bonds financing GPUs, data centers, and related hardware are now presenting a more compelling case than traditional long-term U.S. Treasuries.

Superior Yields and Favorable Terms

Rieder, who has personally reviewed and participated in these transactions, notes that current new bond issuances are not only large in scale but also come with investor-friendly terms that are better than historical averages. The key appeal lies in the yield: investors can now secure returns of approximately 7% by investing in short-duration, single-A-rated bonds. This figure stands in stark contrast to the recently breached 5% yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note.

Furthermore, this approach allows investors to sidestep the duration risk inherent in long-term bonds—the risk of price declines when interest rates rise. Rieder suggests that U.S. Treasuries currently function more as a "market measuring stick" for gauging other assets like equities, rather than a primary investment target.

Surging Issuance Reflects Macro Trend

Behind this debt financing boom is the massive global investment in AI compute infrastructure. Data indicates that global high-grade financing related to AI has surpassed $300 billion this year alone, a figure roughly triple the total for the entire previous year. Hyperscale data center operators are issuing corporate bonds at a historic scale, raising hundreds of billions to meet exploding demand for computing power.

This trend underscores that capital is flooding into the physical build-out of AI hardware at an unprecedented rate. For fixed income investors, it represents an opportunity to gain exposure to a clear, high-growth global industrial trend. These bonds offer a new channel to participate in the AI growth story while benefiting from higher yields and the credit quality of investment-grade issuers compared to government debt.
