Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, has announced the release of a draft yellow paper for a new blockchain initiative, the FLOP protocol. The document, now open for technical review by the global developer community, outlines the project's foundational research and specifications at this early stage.

Architectural Foundation: An Inference Measurement Layer

The core innovation of the FLOP protocol, as described in the v0.5.0 draft, is the creation of a dedicated measurement and settlement layer for "inference" computing tasks. The technical stack is built using the Substrate framework and its FRAME runtime, a choice that prioritizes modularity and future interoperability.

For consensus, the design proposes a hybrid model. The BABE (Blind Assignment for Blockchain Extension) algorithm is tasked with block production, while the AlephBFT consensus mechanism is employed to achieve transaction finality, aiming to balance efficiency with robust security guarantees.

A Transparent Draft, Acknowledging Unresolved Questions

The team has been explicit about the provisional nature of this release. The yellow paper is firmly labeled a draft. It clarifies that statements regarding security and performance within the document exist in different states: some are firm protocol requirements, others are conditional mathematical results, and some are based on initial empirical testing.

Perhaps most importantly, the release notes that certain conclusions currently lack publicly verifiable and reproducible evidence. This level of candor underscores the project's early-phase status and its commitment to building on verified foundations.

In a move toward open development, the project has published not only the specifications but also a list of known open problems, implementation status, evidence logs, and reproducible data sets. The community is invited to focus its review efforts on five critical subsystems:

The draft includes a tentative development timeline. The current plan targets a public testnet launch in Q4 2026. The project indicates that participation in this testnet phase will be a factor in any future token distribution events, potentially incentivizing early technical contributors.

Barring major setbacks, the goal is to deploy the mainnet in Q1 2027. The team cautions that all timelines, parameters, and mechanisms mentioned are subject to change as the project evolves from this draft specification through implementation and broader community feedback.
