Base Elevates Technical Strategy with Independent Stack

Coinbase-backed Ethereum Layer 2 network Base has announced a major shift in its development strategy, moving away from the OP Stack and Superchain architecture developed by Optimism. Instead, Base will adopt its own unified technology stack to streamline development and tailor infrastructure to its specific needs.

The official blog post explains that Base will consolidate core components — including key modules like the sequencer — that were previously scattered across multiple teams and repositories. These will now be unified under the new codebase 'base/base,' reducing coordination overhead and enabling deeper performance optimization.

Reducing Third-Party Dependencies and Governance Enhancements

In addition to the technical overhaul, Base plans to reduce its reliance on external entities such as Flashbots and Paradigm. On the governance front, Base will restructure its security council, replacing former Optimism-linked roles with independent signers to strengthen autonomy and trust.

Open Source Commitment Remains Intact

Despite the shift toward self-developed infrastructure, Base reiterated its commitment to open-source principles. The protocol will remain publicly accessible, and developers are encouraged to build independent clients and maintain upgrade compatibility.

  • Base becomes the first major network to fully exit the Optimism Superchain framework
  • Unified stack enhances development agility and network scalability
  • Governance model adapts to support long-term vision
