Data-Driven Insight: Has the Crypto Winter Finally Thawed?

While market sentiment is fickle, a combination of on-chain metrics and technical analysis can often cut through the noise. A recent comprehensive report from Galaxy Research presents a compelling, data-backed argument that the prolonged Bitcoin bear market may have concluded as early as June this year.

Three Pillars of the Bullish Thesis

Authored by Alex Thorn, Head of Galaxy Research, the analysis moves beyond speculation to focus on observable market shifts. The core argument rests on three converging data points.

1. A Crucial Technical Breakout

The technical landscape shows a notable shift. As of mid-October, Bitcoin has managed to close above its 50-week moving average for five consecutive weeks. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 44-week period where price action was consistently suppressed below this key long-term indicator. A sustained break above this moving average is widely regarded by analysts as a potential signal of trend reversal.

2. Long-Term Holders Are Not Selling

On-chain behavior offers perhaps the strongest evidence. The report examines activity from wallets holding Bitcoin for over five years. The data reveals a clear trend of decreasing movement: the monthly volume of BTC moved from these "long-term holder" addresses has declined from an average of 67,000 in 2024 to 47,000 in 2025, and further down to 34,000 in 2026.

Although approximately 1.11 million "old" BTC have moved since October 2024, the report notes this supply was largely absorbed by Bitcoin spot ETFs and corporate treasuries. This suggests distribution is not flowing into the retail market but is being met with substantial institutional demand, indicating weakened selling pressure from the most conviction-driven cohort.

3. The Macro Backdrop Provides Tailwinds

Beyond crypto-specific data, a formidable macroeconomic factor looms large. The report highlights the staggering $40.44 trillion U.S. federal debt. In an environment of anticipated currency debasement, the logic for holding scarce, inflation-resistant assets like Bitcoin continues to strengthen, providing a persistent macro narrative.

Current Market Context and Key Risk to Watch

Synthesizing these points, Thorn states, "The bottom appears to be in, selling pressure has abated, the depreciation hedge narrative is strengthening, and the crowd has left." Bitcoin currently trades around the $80,000 level.

The report maintains a measured tone, however, by clearly defining its risk parameter. The bullish outlook is contingent on Bitcoin maintaining its footing above the 50-week moving average (currently near $76,540) on a weekly closing basis. It cautions that a weekly close below this level, followed by a failure to reclaim it within a month, would seriously challenge the positive assessment.

This underscores that while long-term indicators have turned favorable, the market still needs to consolidate above critical support to build a foundation for the next sustained move.
