Extreme Market Calm: Dwindling Volume Signals Demand Void
Bitcoin is currently trapped in a tight trading range, according to the latest analysis from Glassnode. The price is sandwiched between the median realized price around $63k and the short-term holder cost basis near $68.7k. More notably, spot trading volume has collapsed to its lowest level since 2019, painting a clear picture of a market in compression.
This tranquility appears stark against the macro backdrop. With core U.S. inflation cooling to 2.5% in July and equity markets hitting new highs, Bitcoin has shown little to no positive reaction, even displaying weakness. This directly indicates that the core driver for price appreciation—sustained demand from new capital—is conspicuously absent.
Seller Exhaustion vs. Buyer Absence: A Market Imbalance
A contradictory dynamic is unfolding among market participants.
- Selling pressure is drying up: Multiple metrics suggest weakening sell-side momentum. The proportion of Bitcoin supply in profit has entered zones typical of historical bear market bottoms, implying a dwindling pool of coins likely to be sold. The "Seller Exhaustion" indicator has also hit a cycle low. Furthermore, the Adjusted Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) has been rejected nine times near the break-even line, showing investors are not eager to sell at marginal profits.
- Buyer demand remains missing: Contrasting the fading sell pressure is persistent buyer apathy. Net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs are minimal, while on-chain data shows coins continue moving to exchanges, adding potential supply. More riskily, leveraged long positions have been built prematurely in derivatives markets. Open interest is high relative to depressed volume, and bid-side depth on spot order books is thinning, creating a fragile market structure.
Critical Levels to Watch: Breakout or Breakdown Will Set the Tone
Glassnode identifies two key price levels that could break the current deadlock, leading to vastly different outcomes.
The Bullish Path: Requires Volume Confirmation
The primary resistance to watch is the short-term holder cost basis around $68.7k. A sustained break above this level must be accompanied by a significant increase in spot trading volume and a resurgence in ETF inflows to be considered a reliable signal of structural improvement. A price breakout without supporting capital flows is likely a false dawn.
The Downside Risk: Potential for Accelerated Decline
Conversely, the support zone near $58.5k warrants close attention. A breakdown below this level could trigger an accelerated sell-off in the current environment of thin spot bids and crowded derivative longs, flushing out excessive leverage.
Glassnode's overall stance remains cautious. The current phase is characterized as a "late-stage bear market compression," marked by extremely low volatility, poor liquidity, and subdued sentiment. While some sell-side metrics are nearing exhaustion, the strong buy-side signal from genuine demand necessary to kickstart a new sustainable bull cycle has yet to materialize. The market awaits a true catalyst.
