CFTC Unveils Frontier Forum Series, Inaugural Session on AI Finance

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Innovation Special Working Group has launched the “Frontier Forum Series,” a new initiative featuring public roundtable discussions. These forums are designed to foster open dialogue on innovative financial technologies that are fundamentally reshaping U.S. markets.

Public-Private Dialogue on Innovation and Oversight

The series aims to create a collaborative platform connecting regulators with technology builders, industry practitioners, and researchers. A central question guides the discussions: how can regulators promote responsible financial innovation while safeguarding market participants and ensuring the integrity and resilience of the financial system?

CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig emphasized the unprecedented pace of technological change impacting markets. He stated that regulators must engage directly with those developing and implementing these technologies to understand their implications and shape effective regulatory responses.

Inaugural Focus: AI and Agentic Finance

The kickoff forum is scheduled for October 28, 2026, with the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Agentic Finance.” This topic targets one of the most transformative and complex forces in fintech.

  • Examining AI Applications: Discussions will delve into the deepening use of AI in core financial areas like trading, risk management, and client services.
  • Scrutinizing Agentic Finance: The forum will address the regulatory challenges posed by “agentic finance,” which involves AI systems capable of autonomously executing complex financial tasks.
  • Building a Forward-Looking Framework: The goal is to gather diverse perspectives to inform future regulatory and policy needs.

The launch of this series signals a more proactive and engaged approach by U.S. financial regulators, seeking to understand and guide disruptive technologies to balance innovation with market stability.
