The $3 Trillion Crypto Economy: North America's Market Dynamics
North America solidified its position as the world's leading cryptocurrency market, with approximately $3.02 trillion in on-chain value received during the 12 months ending July 1, 2026. According to Chainalysis's 2026 Geography of Cryptocurrency Report, this figure represents a slight 1.9% decline year-over-year but underscores the region's entrenched dominance.
A Tale of Two Markets: US and Canada
Beneath the aggregate number, the trajectories of the United States and Canada diverged.
- The United States remained the overwhelming engine, accounting for roughly $2.78 trillion, or over 92% of the regional total. Its market size, however, contracted by 2.2% compared to the previous period.
- Canada emerged as a growth spot, with received value climbing to an estimated $247.7 billion, marking a 2.3% increase against the regional trend.
The Rise of Micro-Payments and Stablecoin Supremacy
The report sheds light on evolving user behavior and market structure through deeper on-chain metrics.
One significant trend is the rapid adoption of a specific payment protocol for tiny, frequent transactions. Over a 16-month span, this protocol facilitated more than 138 million transactions, with over 87% of payment amounts falling between $0.01 and $0.10. Perhaps more tellingly, the median time from a wallet's first funding to its first payment using this protocol collapsed from 73 days at the end of 2025 to just 18 minutes by Q3 2026, signaling a dramatic shift toward crypto for everyday micro-transactions.
Meanwhile, in trading venues, stablecoins have achieved near-total dominance. USD-pegged stablecoins commanded a staggering 99.1% of all order book trading volume. Euro-denominated stablecoins captured a mere 0.45% share, highlighting the US dollar's role as the de facto unit of account and settlement within the crypto trading ecosystem.
