The DRAM Market in Flux: Samsung Leads, But CXMT Emerges as Fastest Grower
The latest global memory market tracker from Counterpoint Research reveals a DRAM landscape in Q2 2026 that is both familiar and unexpectedly dynamic. Samsung Electronics reclaimed the top position with a 39% market share, returning to levels seen in 2024. SK Hynix and Micron followed closely, holding 26% and 25% respectively, with the trio collectively commanding around 90% of the market—a picture of apparent stability.
The Standout Performer: CXMT's Meteoric Rise
Yet, the quarter's most compelling story wasn't the reshuffle among giants, but the explosive growth of China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). The company's DRAM revenue saw an astonishing year-over-year increase of 716%, solidifying its status as the world's fastest-growing DRAM manufacturer.
This surge is attributed to two primary factors:
- Robust Domestic Demand: Sustained strong demand for legacy DRAM within the Chinese market provided a solid foundation for the local supplier.
- Continuous Capacity Expansion: Investments in production capacity over recent years are now bearing fruit, significantly boosting shipment volumes.
Looking Ahead: Capacity Expansion Could Redefine the Competitive Map
Neil Shah, Vice President of Research at Counterpoint Research, offered insight into the implications. He highlighted the latter half of 2026 as a critical period to watch. "The sustainability of CXMT's momentum hinges on its capacity expansion pace," Shah noted. "If it can successfully scale production to meet not only domestic but also international demand, its global market share has clear potential for further gains."
This suggests the current market structure, dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, is not immutable. A rapidly catching-up challenger, advancing in both technology and scale, possesses the potential to disrupt the established order. The global DRAM market may be on the cusp of a new phase of realignment.
