Morgan Stanley Adjusts Apple Outlook Amid Growth Deceleration

In a recently published research note, Morgan Stanley offered a measured assessment of Apple's near-term trajectory. While the company's fiscal third-quarter results largely met expectations, the report spotlighted emerging concerns within its services segment.

Services Momentum Cools, Margin Guidance Disappoints

Apple's services revenue came in at $30.7 billion for the quarter, representing a 12% year-over-year increase. This growth rate marks a noticeable deceleration and fell short of consensus estimates. According to Morgan Stanley, the slowdown stems from two primary headwinds: unfavorable foreign exchange movements and ongoing softness in the global mobile gaming market.

Perhaps more telling were the signals on profitability. The services gross margin contracted sequentially to 75.6%, missing forecasts. Furthermore, Apple's guidance for fiscal Q4 overall gross margin stands at 47% to 48%. Excluding a roughly 1-percentage-point benefit from tariff refunds, the core margin is approximately 46.5%—a 150-basis-point sequential decline. This cautious outlook has given investors pause.

Dual Pressures Squeeze Profitability

The report suggests that the subdued margin guidance underscores a clear reality: Apple is grappling with a dual squeeze from persistent supply chain constraints and rising costs for key components like memory. These structural cost increases are pressuring the company's earnings power.

Following a reassessment of mid-term profitability, Morgan Stanley lowered its fiscal 2027 earnings per share estimate for Apple from $10.39 to $10.00. Consequently, the price target was trimmed from $364 to $360. The firm, however, reaffirmed its Overweight rating, emphasizing continued confidence in Apple's long-term value.

Awaiting the Next Catalytic Cycle

Despite the long-term optimism, the report is clear that Apple's stock lacks immediate, powerful catalysts in the near term. The current environment calls for investor patience.

Morgan Stanley views the next significant phase of stock momentum as likely dependent on several key milestones:

  • Next-Generation Product Launches: Including the highly anticipated iPhone 18 series and the potential debut of a foldable model.
  • AI Capabilities Rollout: Meaningful AI upgrades to core services like Siri becoming broadly available to users.
  • Regulatory Clarity: More definitive resolutions to ongoing regulatory scrutiny in major international markets.

Until these factors gain clarity, Apple's share price may continue to trade in a range-bound pattern. The report paints a picture of near-term pressure giving way to long-term opportunity, with pivotal inflection points potentially on the horizon.
