A New Era for Ethereum Block Propagation
On October 21st, a significant advancement in blockchain network efficiency was achieved. Optimum, a networking startup led by MIT professor Muriel Médard, announced the mainnet launch of its core block propagation software, mump2p, on the Ethereum network.
From Optional to Mandatory: A Critical Infrastructure Upgrade
The adoption of this technology is rapidly transitioning from experimental to production-scale. ether.fi, a major liquid staking protocol within the Ethereum ecosystem, has issued a mandate requiring all 12 of its node operators to integrate and run the mump2p software. Crucially, this tool was previously only an optional performance enhancer for these operators.
Rok Kopp, co-founder and Chief Growth Officer of ether.fi, stated, "We do not mandate our entire validator set to adopt new infrastructure lightly. We only do so when confident it tangibly improves the staker experience and overall network health. mump2p met that bar."
Technical Architecture and Performance Gains
mump2p is not designed to replace Ethereum's existing GossipSub protocol. Instead, it operates as a "sidecar" gateway, layered on top of the foundational libp2p layer. Its core technical advantage lies in the use of random linear network coding.
- Deployment Scale: Currently, 16 node operators are running mump2p in production, collectively managing approximately 22,000 validator keys.
- Asset Coverage: These nodes secure over 1.4 million staked ETH, representing more than 3% of Ethereum's total staked supply.
- Performance Data: According to Optimum's tests, compared to standard GossipSub, mump2p improves block delivery speed by approximately 2.42x and reduces the variance in delivery time by about 7.88x.
Industry Adoption and Future Roadmap
The technology has already garnered support from several leading node service providers and institutions, including Blockdaemon, Everstake, P2P.org, Stakefish, and Bitcoin Suisse. This underscores the market's demand for technologies that enhance underlying network performance.
Professor Muriel Médard drew a parallel to the financial world: "In traditional finance, institutions invest billions to shave milliseconds off execution time because speed is directly equivalent to value and money. The same principle applies to blockchain networks."
Optimum's roadmap indicates plans to expand the mump2p protocol to other high-throughput blockchain networks following its Ethereum deployment. The company initiated a private testnet in June 2025 and previously secured $11 million in seed funding led by venture firm 1kx, providing a solid foundation for continued development and ecosystem growth.
