Hyperliquid Unlocks New Revenue Stream: Millions Earned from Idle Assets

In a significant shift for its business model, Hyperliquid, through its newly implemented AQAv2 mechanism, has recorded its first major revenue generation directly from user deposits. A payment of $14.58 million was issued on October 3rd, representing fees accrued over the previous 30 days from USDC reserves held on the platform. These funds are directed to a designated aid fund for purchasing HYPE tokens.

The Mechanics of AQAv2: Monetizing Deposits

Moving beyond its reliance on trading fees, AQAv2 introduces a paradigm where the platform generates income simply from holding user collateral. The process is structured as follows:

  • Users bridge USDC to Hyperliquid.
  • Circle mints the corresponding assets on HyperEVM.
  • The treasury's USDC balance is charged a daily fee, with settlements occurring every 30 days.

To ensure compliance, Coinbase and Circle have each staked 500,000 HYPE tokens. Failure to make timely payments could result in Coinbase losing up to 2% of its stake daily.

Substantial Financial Potential: $193M Annualized Projection

The inaugural payment covered the period from August 26th to September 24th. The implied average fee rate for this cycle is approximately 3.14%. Extrapolating this rate at the platform's current scale, this revenue stream could yield an annualized income of around $193 million.

As Hans explained, this transforms the platform's economics. Revenue is no longer solely tied to trading activity; it now accrues continuously from assets held on the platform, whether they are actively deployed or not.

Platform Growth and Earning Dynamics

Hyperliquid has demonstrated remarkable growth in 2024. Key metrics from January 1st to September 30th show:

  • Total Open Interest surged from $7.72B to $16.4B.
  • Platform margin increased from $4.34B to $7.22B.
  • Perpetuals cumulative volume reached ~$2T, generating $493.3M in protocol fees, equating to roughly 2.46 basis points per dollar traded.

Based on this year's average trading velocity and the current AQAv2 rate, every dollar of margin on the platform contributes approximately 15.4 cents in annual protocol revenue. About 12.5 cents come from trading fees, while the new AQAv2 mechanism adds roughly 2.8 cents.

Looking Ahead: Revenue Could Double by 2030

Hans provided a forward-looking scenario: assuming a 20% annual growth in the stablecoin market and Hyperliquid maintaining its current ~8.7% market share, the protocol's total annual revenue could grow from approximately $11.1B today to around $24B by the end of 2030. This projection underscores the substantial synergistic potential between the new AQAv2 income and the platform's core trading business.
