Optical Module Stocks Fell: Market Panic or a Value Opportunity?

The past month witnessed a broad risk-off sentiment sweep across the AI sector. Leading optical module companies were not spared in this downturn. According to a Bernstein research report dated October 19, Lumentum shares declined approximately 13%, while Coherent saw a more significant drop of around 28%, mirroring the trajectory of some AI infrastructure peers.

It appears market concerns about the AI supply chain have been indiscriminately applied to component suppliers like optical module makers. However, Bernstein analysts make a crucial distinction: the stock price weakness is not matched by a deterioration in the underlying business fundamentals.

Intact Fundamentals: Earnings Estimates Hold Firm

The report scrutinizes core supply-demand dynamics and profitability trends, concluding that the fundamental drivers for optical modules remain robust. To support this view, Bernstein provided forecasts for the upcoming fiscal first-quarter results:

  • Coherent: Revenue is projected at $2.4 billion with EPS of $2.05. This outlook tops the consensus estimates of $2.3 billion in revenue and $1.99 EPS.
  • Lumentum: Revenue is seen at $1.254 billion with EPS of $4.18, largely in line with consensus expectations of $1.252 billion and $4.20 EPS.

Both companies are scheduled to report earnings after the market closes on November 4th and 5th, respectively. More notably, Bernstein suggests that based on current demand, they are likely to issue second-quarter guidance that could exceed market expectations.

A Clear Institutional Stance: Maintaining Outperform Ratings

Backed by confidence in the fundamentals, Bernstein reaffirmed its Outperform ratings on both Lumentum and Coherent. The firm's price targets also reflect optimism about future upside: $1,220 for Lumentum and $350 for Coherent.

This stance sends a clear message: from an institutional perspective, the recent stock pullback is viewed more as a product of transient market sentiment than a fundamental impairment of value. For investors focused on long-term trends, the current volatility may present an opportunity to reassess and position accordingly.
