AI Enters Government Offices: Tencent's WorkBuddy Pilots in Guangdong

Tencent has officially launched WorkBuddy, an intelligent assistant designed specifically for government affairs. The tool is currently in a pilot phase with several provincial-level departments in Guangdong, including the Medical Security Bureau and the SME Service Center, covering dozens of real-world administrative scenarios. The system is scheduled to become available to the first group of civil servants in late August.

Beyond Queries: A "Digital Colleague" That Gets Work Done

Unlike conventional conversational AI, WorkBuddy is built to be a "digital colleague" that integrates deeply into operational workflows. It moves past basic functions like policy lookup and document drafting to directly interface with backend business systems and execute tasks.

A key example is its use in Guangdong's Medical Security Bureau. Civil servants can submit batches of maternity subsidy applications to WorkBuddy. The AI can identify key information, perform batch pre-review, and provide preliminary assessments. Staff then simply confirm the AI's findings, and the results are automatically written back into the core business system, completing the workflow loop.

Beyond process automation, WorkBuddy demonstrates several other capabilities crucial for government work:

  • Intelligent Knowledge Management: Automatically organizes and updates scattered administrative knowledge, policies, and regulations into a dynamic, searchable repository.

Critically, WorkBuddy's access permissions are strictly tied to the existing credentials of the civil servant using it. The AI can only access and operate the data and system functions its human user is already authorized for, inherently preventing unauthorized access.
