Grayscale's Q2 Rebalancing Reveals Strategic Shifts Across Crypto Funds

Grayscale Investments, a leading digital asset manager, has completed its quarterly portfolio rebalancing for the second quarter of 2024. Adhering to the methodologies of their respective benchmark indices, several of Grayscale's cryptocurrency funds underwent significant changes, offering insights into the firm's updated views on various crypto subsectors.

Smart Contract Platform Fund (GSC): BNB Takes the Lead

The most notable shift occurred within the Grayscale Smart Contract Platform Fund (GSC). Following the CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Select Capped Index, the fund sold portions of existing holdings and allocated the proceeds to purchase BNB. This move propelled BNB to a weighting of approximately 30.6%, surpassing both Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) to become the fund's largest single asset.

As of August 3, the GSC fund's composition is as follows:

  • BNB: 30.6%
  • Ethereum (ETH): 29.47%
  • Solana (SOL): 29.15%
  • Cardano (ADA): 4.88%
  • Other Assets (including Hedera, Avalanche, Sui): ~5.9%

Decentralized AI Fund: Exiting NEAR

The Grayscale Decentralized AI Fund made the decision to fully divest its position in NEAR Protocol (NEAR). The proceeds from the sale were reinvested proportionally across the fund's remaining constituent assets, altering its concentration profile.

While officially removed, data as of August 3 shows NEAR still accounted for 31.35% of the fund. The remaining holdings included Bittensor (TAO, 29.15%), Render (RENDER, 21.59%), and Filecoin (FIL, 17.91%). This indicates the other assets are poised to see their weights increase following NEAR's exit.

DeFi Fund: Selling Uniswap (UNI)

In line with the rules of the CoinDesk DeFi Select Index, the Grayscale DeFi Fund (DEFG) sold its Uniswap (UNI) holdings this quarter. The capital was reinvested across the fund's other assets according to their existing weights to maintain index tracking.

Post-rebalancing, the fund's top holdings have changed. Its portfolio as of August 3 primarily consisted of:

  • Ondo (ONDO): 25.44%
  • Aave (AAVE): 19.97%
  • Ethena (ENA): 12.19%
  • Curve (CRV): 4.42%
  • Lido DAO (LDO): 3.82%

It's important to note that the reported 34.16% UNI weighting reflects a snapshot taken after the trade execution but before the new weightings were fully applied.

Grayscale's quarterly rebalancing is a rules-based process dictated by index methodologies, not discretionary stock-picking. However, these adjustments send clear signals about institutional capital reallocating weight across crypto verticals. The pronounced rise in BNB's allocation and the exits from NEAR and UNI are particularly significant shifts for the market to digest.
